"Zatvor" (Serbian Cyrillic: "Затвор", lit. "Prison") is a song written and performed by prominent Serb war singer Baja Mali Knindža. Initially appearing in live concerts, the song was officially recorded and released in Rat i mir.

Music and lyrics

While there is no official interpretation of "Zatvor", the song tells the story of how a patriotic man is put in jail for stealing, hoping to make it out. It is implied in the lyrics that this man is framed.

The song may have been based off of an experience Baja had while traveling in March of 1993 where he and Cvetin Todorović were detained in a prison in St. Gallen for reasons that were unclear. His detainment only lasted for about two hours and was subsequently let go. The line "Pao sam, drugi su krivi" may be a reference to how a murder in the area caused the authorities to increase their presence. The line "opet sam krao" may be in reference to when Swiss authorities requested to see proof of purchase, thinking that Baja stole some CDs.[1]

Music video

"Na srcu mnogo rana ima. U njima vlada večna zima. Na bolnoj duši ožiljci stoje. to su tragovi prošlosti moje" - is the intro phrase.

(There are many wounds on my heart. They are lead by eternal winter. Scars remain on my aching soul. They are traces of my past.)

The video starts showing outside of a prison, and Baja behind bars. It then switches to him breaking rocks with a hammer. Next scene shows Baja singing from behind bars and it briefly switches to prison's interior, specifically, a cell and process of giving food, before going back to Baja singing the chorus. It then goes to show prisoners splitting a loaf of bread and people looking out from a window. A woman then comes to Baja and they kiss through the bars and they hold hands. She lights him a cigarette, touches his face, and leaves. He sings alone before the video ends, when they both leave the prison with Baja wearing a suit.

Lyrics

Lyrics:

Na grudima orao sivi
ja sam u duši delija
pao sam, drugi su krivi
opet me čeka ćelija

Zatvorski dani teku
sanjam posetu neku
ipak bi bilo najbolje
da mogu napolje

Napolju snegovi veju
tuga mi srce kida
u lice meni se smeju
stari grafiti sa zida

Zatvorski dani teku
sanjam posetu neku
ipak bi bilo najbolje
da mogu napolje

Verujem, ima Boga
verujem, ima pravde
i ja sam svestan toga
ja ću izaći odavde

Zatvorski dani teku
sanjam posetu neku
ipak bi bilo najbolje
da mogu napolje

Ožiljci svud po telu
na grudima orao sivi
opet sam krao, opet sam pao
šta ćeš, jednom se živi

Lyrics (English):

On my chest is a gray eagle
In my soul, I'm a hero
I wa, the others are guilty
Again, a cell is waiting for me

Days in prison go by
I dream of a visit
It would still be better
If I was free

Snows are blowing outside
Grief is tearing my heart
I'm getting laughed in my face
By old graffitis on the wall

Days in prison go by
I dream of a visit
It would still be better
If I was free

I believe there is a God
I believe there is truth
And I'm aware of that
I will get out of here

Days in prison go by
I dream of a visit
It would still be better
If I was free

My body is filled with scars
On my chest is a gray eagle
I stole again, I got caught again
What can you do, you only live once
