The political situation in Croatia, like in the rest of Yugoslavia, was changing by 1989. The first political parties were being established and on the 10th of December 1989 the League of Communists of Croatia adopted the decision that the next elections in early 1990 would be free, multiparty elections. On the 11th of January 1990 the League of Communists amended legislation to permit the establishment of political parties. The first political parties were registered on the 5th of February. The first round of elections was scheduled on the 22-23rd of April and the second on the 6-7th of May. The main political organization was the nationalist party Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) led by Franjo Tuđman, which fought for the independence of Croatia and which would subsequently win the elections.

The political changes were also visible in the music scene of that time. The first Croatian patriotic songs, mostly old folk songs, were recorded in late 1989-early 1990. Despite the ban of such materials in Yugoslavia, there seemed to have been little intervention from the authorities and the songs spread both inside the country and abroad. [[Duško Lokin|Duško]] himself already recorded an album in 1989 entitled [[Najljepše Hrvatske rodoljubne pjesme]], consisting of both folk and newly composed patriotic songs. The album was released outside Croatia, in Switzerland, and it spread across the diaspora. Despite the mention, Đorđe Novković was not credited on the album. The music was composed by [[Duško Lokin|Duško]], while the main lyricist was [[Željko Pavičić]]. The album was arranged by famous composer and arranger [[Ivo Lesić]]. The 10 songs would be recorded at [[Nenad Vilović]]'s studio in Split and produced by [[Božo Medić]], who worked previously with [[Ivo Fabijan]] on his 1989 patriotic album [[Riječ Hrvatska|''Riječ Hrvatska'']].

== Release ==
The album came out in April 1990 and would be promoted in ''Večernji list'' on the 13th and 19th of April. The lead song was an adaptation of the poem [[Gospa Marija|''Gospa Marija'']] by famous writer AG Matoš (1873-1914). The album contained both patriotic and love song. Apart from the title track, other notable songs on the album were ''[[Ja Hrvatsku zaboravit neću]]'', a big hit in the diaspora, A cover of the folk song ''[[Marjane, marjane]]'' and ''[[Majko zemljo]]'', written by [[Duško Lokin|Duško]] himself and first released on his 1989 patriotic album under the name ''U tebi da sklopim oči'', now in a new arrangement.

The album was released by [[Jugoton]] on both LP and cassette, and it was also rereleased by HDZ together with other patriotic albums in their electoral campaign and rereleased in Switzerland by [[IVS]] as well. [[IVS]] would also released a VHS tape by the [[Donesi mi grudu zemlje (VHS)|same name]] later the same year.

== Popularity ==

During the war [[Ivana Glavašević]] wrote a song entitled ''[[Stazama garde]]'' which the band recorded together with [[Zvonimir Ćosić - Ćosa|Ćosa]] as vocalist. The song was included on the compilation ''[[Mom Brodu]]'' and also received a music video on TV, made in memory of Gordan Lederer, a war cameraman that died in Banija in August 1991. The song was added over Lederer's last war video named ''Banijska ratna praskozorja.''

In May 1993 the band recorded their first and only studio album entitled ''[[I zato pjevat ću]].'' The cassette was dedicated to the killed and wounded Croatian soldiers<ref name=":0" /> and was released in collaboration with the Brod branch of the HVIDR. The receipts from the tape went into the accounts of HVIDR, in order to help with humanitarian causes. On this album [[Zvonimir Ćosić - Ćosa|Ćosa]] would again be main vocalist, with [[Predrag Matasović|Predrag]] performing on 2 songs. After the war the band would change its direction, focusing on folk music rather than rock. This resulted in other changes to the lineup. [[Zvonimir Ćosić - Ćosa|Ćosa]] was a well known singer in various local rock bands from Slavonski Brod in the 80s and early 90s. At the start of the war he joined the 108th brigade as a volunteer. He dedicated his time, when he was not on the battlefield, to music.

The song was directly inspired by the tragedy that occurred during the heavy bombings of the town. On the 3rd of May 1992, one of the hardest days for Brod, in the settlement of Jelas, an airplane bomb fell on the house of the Marinković family, killing 5 children that were hiding inside the basement of the home.<ref>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOdPPuhKgf4''Pjesma je nastala u jeku najtežeg bombardiranja Slavonskog Broda, neposredno inspirirana tragedijom u gradskom naselju Jelas, 3. In June 1992, [[Zvonimir Ćosić - Ćosa|Ćosa]] gathered his friends [[Antun Lović - Toni]] (guitar), [[Alen Ruško]] (keyboard) and [[Mirko Šenkovski - Kosta]] (backing vocals) in Brod's wartime TV studio, from where HRT reported the bombing of Slavonski Brod. The song was recorded in wartime conditions, with improvised equipment. On the same day the TV technicians presented there a video for the song, consisting of edited war footage from the area of Brod and in the evening it was broadcasted for the first time during the news on HRT and parts of it on the program ''Slikom na sliku''.<ref>https://www.sbrock.net/wiki/%C4%86osa</ref>

== Background ==
Miro Barešić was born in Šibenik on the 10th of September 1950. At 18 he was sentenced to six months in prison for refusing to join the Yugoslav army. After serving the sentence, in 1969 he illegally fled to Italy and later Sweden, where he would link up with members of the Croatian National Resistance movement, an organization of Croatian nationalists

In 1971 he would gain notoriety when he and Anđelko Brajković stormed the Yugoslav embassy in Sweden and took the Yugoslav ambassador, Vladimir Rolović, former head of UDBA and former commander of the Goli Otok prison hostage. They wanted to exchange him for Miljenko Hrkać a member of the Croatian Liberation Movement, sentenced to death in Yugoslavia. However, when the police approached the building, the two killed the hostage. They surrendered shortly after that. While they were being escorted, Miro kissed Anđelko on the cheek and started chanting "long live the Independent State of Croatia" and "long live Ante Pavelić". Despite being convicted of murder, They would serve their sentence only until 1972, when a group of Croatian terrorists hijacked a Swedish domestic flight, demanding their release.

Barešić was flown to Spain, stayed in custody for 19 months and then moved to Paraguay under the false name of Toni Šarić. There he joined the armed forces, rising to the rank of captain. He was sent to the USA as a bodyguard for the Paraguayan ambassador. His identity was discovered and he was forced to flee back to Paraguay. However he would face trial in New York after an extortion ring that targeted Yugoslav immigrants to the United States was uncovered and, despite being acquitted, he was deported to Sweden where he was sentenced to life in prison, only serving 7 years between 1980 and 1987.

In 1991, at the start of the war in Croatia, he would return under the false name of Božidar Smotalić, and formed a unit subordinated to the Ministry of Defence in Zadar under the name Marko Marić. On the 31st of July 1991, at his first action in the army, he was killed near Benkovac. The circumstances of Barešić's death are controversial. It was the subject of a criminal inquest of 2002, launched after Nikola Majstorović, author of a film dealing Barešić's death, filed a complaint with the Croatian State Attorney, and it concluded that Barešić was killed in an ambush prepared by the SAO Krajina special police. Two private investigators, on the other hand, claimed Barešić was killed by one of men in his own unit, allegedly to cover up the identities of former Yugoslav secret police agents who had returned to Croatia since 1990 under the guise of political dissidents before Barešić identified them.

However, he would have to pause his singing career in mid 1991, when he joined the Croatian army at the start of the war. He was a member of the 1st Battalion of the 4th Guards Brigade, in the third company, third platoon(Foka Fighters), made up of soldiers from the community of Mjesni from Split III. He would see action on the Zadar and Drniš battlefields. These experiences would make him write patriotic songs. He would often perform for his company and his comrades would help him write some of these songs.
